Cousin Carl Edwards was fast enough to take the pole for NASCAR Sprint Cup Jeff Byrd 500 presented by Food City at Bristol Motor Speedway, but Ryan Newman’s pole record of 14.90 remains intact. Edwards circled the half mile high banked bull ring at 128.014 miles per hour and a time of 14.989. Roush Fenway teammate Greg Biffle will start on the outside of row one.
The surprise for this round of qualifying at the most electrifying track on the Sprint Cup calendar was who ended up on row two. Regan Smith powered his Furniture Row Chevy around the track with a time of 15.040 to capture the third place starting position and Richard Childress Racing’s Paul Menard continue to turn head with his best season to date. Menard managed a time of 15.045 to start fourth on the field. He continues to be the highlight driver from the RCR stable.
